Veterinarians who treat animals use the same medical equipment used on humans, such as stethoscopes, surgical instruments, sutures, surgical skin staplers and diagnostic equipment, including radiographic and ultrasound equipment.

The general practice veterinarian spends 1/3 to 1/2 of his or her time in surgery. Animal neutering operations are done in most veterinarians' offices. Many veterinarians also perform orthopedic procedures, bone setting, dentistry and trauma surgery. Many of these surgeries require the use of skin staplers.
